Session 1: Ottoman heritage music performance

- Creating a makam performance from graphic notation

Session 2: The Ottomans and their culture
- L.O. To understand when the Ottoman empire existed and to explore its rich heritage
- Student task: To create a symmetrical iznik tile

Session 3: Soundscape workshop
- L.O. To compose a soundscape based on an Ottoman heritage visual stimulus
- Introduction to the graphic notation approach
- Collaborative interpretation and playback by music specialist

Session 4: Dynamics workshop
- L.O. To use colour coding to add dynamics to the makam melody composed in the previous workshop
- Developing the graphical notation technique to use colour
- Collaborative interpretation and playback by music specialist

Session 5: Students’ composition performance
- Makam musicians perform a concert of the students’ compositions
- Students provide narration on cultural context and composition process
- Accompanied by visuals of graphical notation compositions
